Gareth has always had dogs at the forefront of his mind. Beginning as a child having family dogs as pets, until he was allowed his very own dog. At age 14, Gareth began volunteer work experience at The National Animal Welfare Trust, to gain more insight into dogs and absorb as much information as he could.

After proving to his parents, he had what it took to care for a dog, Gareth finally adopted his very own. Leo, who was an English Springer Spaniel. Gareth and Leo started their journey at the local dog training club where Gareth eventually became an instructor. Gareth competed in Obedience and Heelwork to Music (HTM) with Leo, even going as far as Crufts.

Gareth later started showing all kinds of breeds: Whippets, English Springer Spaniels, Corgis and Miniature Pinchers. But he got his very first Belgian Shepherd puppy, Opera, nearly 10 years ago, his love for showing, grooming and care was kicked up a notch. It was at this point Gareth’s eye for detail in grooming became key, and he discovered it was something he was naturally gifted at and wanted to pursue.

He and his puppy Opera went on to win Best Puppy in Breed at Crufts in 2015. Another of his Belgian Shepherd Dogs, Kenya, also went on to win Best of Breed at Crufts in 2020. Gareth and his Belgian Shepherds went from strength to strength, winning well at shows in both the United Kingdom and Europe.

Grooming has emerged as a deep passion over the last 10 years for Gareth. He enjoys the breed standard trims, but thoroughly enjoys the freedom of expression the Doodle Cross breeds allow him. Being somewhat of a perfectionist, he takes huge pride in making sure that every dog he styles, leaves looking their absolute best.

Gareth has worked and trained with some of the top groomers in the country and more recently within Cornwall and has a wealth of knowledge and passion. The desire to provide a top-level service and the highest of welfare standards has been the driving force behind him opening The Cornish Dog Barber.
